Winter Golden Hour Engagement in Philadelphia | Sunny + Kevin

Nov 9, 2022

Despite the slight chills of that winter weather, Sunny and Kevin’s engagement session was a really beautiful one. When deciding on where to take their engagement photos, it was imperative that we chose the correct timing. As much as we love the brisk winter air, standing outside for extended periods of time may not be the most ideal. However, after a quick discussion, we decided to have Sunny and Kevin’s winter golden hour engagement in Philadelphia at The Rodin Museum and The Barnes Foundation.

Winter Golden Hour Engagement in Philadelphia

The Rodin Museum is a beautiful landmark in Philly where many locals (and out-of-staters) visit. You’re surrounded by world-renowned sculptures and art, and the architecture here is impeccable. This is definitely one of my favorite locations to take engagement photos. When it came to deciding on locations for their engagement photos, Sunny and Kevin really appreciated the simple and modern look of the Rodin Museum while still being right in the middle of Philly. A blend of two words and it was pure perfection.

We met up on that March day and the weather was beautiful. The sun was shining and these two were ready to celebrate this next step in their journey together. Capturing you candidly is one of SCP’s main priorities, so making sure we get to see your true authentic selves is our main priority. Sunny and Kevin flowed naturally in front of the camera as we wandered throughout the grounds of the museum, really soaking it in. Forever cherishing this moment with S+K and getting to document this beautiful time in their lives.

How To Prep For Your Winter Engagement Photos

Winter time is not the most sought-after time to take your engagement photos. However, this season is vastly overlooked and it really can be one of the perfect times to get your engagement session done. A lot of photographers will have availability in the winter time for engagement sessions and it will give you more flexibility with which date you choose. Just some food for thought here. However, before you start planning ahead, it’s important what you need to do in order to prep for your winter engagement session. Here are just a few helpful tips.

Dress Appropriately

This goes without saying, but winter time is c-o-l-d. You’re going to want to make sure you bundle up and dress for the occasion. There are still very cute outfits that you can have and layer to still get those beautiful and elegant photos, while still being comfy and warm.

Use Accessories To Your Advantage

Winter is the perfect excuse to layer, layer and layer. You also get way more opportunities to have accessories that will help you build on your outfits. Scarves, hats and gloves are just some of the many ways you can keep your self warm while still looking stylish.

Choose A Location That Speaks For Itself

During the winter, greenery is far and few between here in Pennsylvania. The trees are bare and if you’re looking for tons of it in your engagement session, I’m sorry to disappoint. However, this is the perfect opportunity to find a location that truly speaks volumes all in itself. You don’t need to have beautiful leaves and cascading florals to have some beautiful photos, just sayin’.

Timing is Everything

With a winter engagement session, timing is everything. As we know, during the winter, the sun sets much earlier and we lose light quickly. We don’t want to shoot too early, because mid-day sun can be incredibly harsh and tend to wash us out. My suggestion is to head towards golden hour aka as the sun is setting. The timing is much more ideal and you’re able to get that perfect golden glow that a lot of couples strive for – just like Sunny + Kevin’s images.

Come Prepared

Depending on how cold the day you are shooting is, I would recommend bringing hand warmers with you. Taking quick breaks every so often to warm up your hands will be a sure fire way to get through the frigid cold air with ease. You can also put some toe warmers in your shoes to keep your feet warm as well!

Your winter engagement session does not have to leave you frostbitten. If you’re like Sunny and Kevin and prep for your engagement session accordingly, you can have the most amazing, fun and beautiful time. Trust me!
